CBS2 News Featuring LEAD Today at 5 p.m.

As some of you may know, we are presenting a program twice today in Deerfield in conjunction with our friends at CTAD (Community the Anti-Drug) and the Lake County Health Department.   We will be discussing substance abuse trends, parenting prevention strategies and other things.  We’ve done similar programs this year all over the Chicago area, including here in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff.  We hope you can join us at either 1:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. at the Jewett Park Community Center in Deerfield.

Our Hidden In Plain Sight exhibit will be featured during the 5 p.m. CBS2 Chicago News telecast this evening.  Tune in!

I wrote last week about a proposed state bill (HB0494) that is making its way through the House right now. As a quick refresher, this proposed bill would lower the drinking age in certain circumstances to 18. For many reasons, we think this is not wise and irresponsible.  Over the past week, LEAD staff has been actively pursuing avenues to work through this legislation, and I appreciate the action that many of our community members have taken to write to our state legislators.  To view the details of this bill, LEAD’s position, and how YOU can take action, please click here for reference.

E-Cigs and Vaporizers

It has been brought to our attention that e-cig and vaporizer use among youth in our community is increasing by the day.  This is something we have been concerned about for some time, and one of the reasons we have written presentations, built an exhibit and have proposed local legislation that would help to regulate e-cig use.  I am happy to say that we have put together a really great online presentation that we will launch to our website on Thursday of this week at 2:00 p.m.  Rather than do an in-person presentation, we thought we would try something new where you can view and participate in a guided session right from the comfort of your own home, at your leisure.  The program will take around 30-45 minutes, and I think you’ll find the information relevant and impactful.  We will cover many topics, including but not limited to the following:

  • How e-cigs work?
  • Are they harmful?
  • What’s in an e-cigarette or vaporizer?
  • What is the draw for teen use?
  • How are e-cig companies marketing directly to youth (and why can they get away with it)?

We will also discuss the newest e-cig/vaporizer fad… Juul devices.  Stay tuned.  We’ll send out information on Thursday both via email and social media for how you can get connected to this presentation.

Enjoy the week,

Andy Duran, Executive Director
